Flip flops at the ready

June 2016

Summer is oh so nearly here, although you wouldn’t necessarily believe that given the wet, grey week we’ve just had.  But that is all about to change as of tomorrow, I can feel it in my bones and my shorts and flip flops are lying ready to be donned as soon as the sun shows its face again.

We’ve been laying low for a few weeks now having reluctantly packed away the ski gear at the beginning of May after a pretty epic final week of the season.  You may have seen numerous photos of knee deep powder skiing and face shots at the end of April which I can promise you were all completely genuine.  The end of season did not disappoint right up until those lifts closed.  Since then though, we’ve had a bit of a mixed bag of weather during May – when it’s been nice, it’s been REALLY nice, and then we’ve gone from BBQing in 28 degrees one day to snow in town the following morning…..

On the whole, I love May.  The valley has burst into bloom and is filled with the aroma of lilac and pine forests coming back to life.  It is cuteness overload on the lakes around town with families of ducks and coots bobbing along in the shallows.  Despite the heavy snowfall late in the season, the hiking/biking trails up to the mid stations have been clear and dry for weeks now but there is still a considerable amount of snow on the paths above 2000m.  The lifts are re-opening for summer next weekend (11th), all except the Grands Montets which will open on 25th June, so you will need to watch your footing at altitude in the coming weeks because the snow can be quite “rotten” underneath at this time of year and it is easy to turn an ankle if you’re not careful.  Hopefully much of that will disappear though in the next fortnight as we have a few events to look forward to in June:

21st June: Fete de la musique
This is a free music festival that takes place in towns and villages across France every year on the summer solstice.  A celebration of music of all styles from choral groups, classical music, rockers, DJ’s and folk groups; you will find something to your taste on one of the streets or terraces as you meander through town.  Later in the evening the focus of the event is on Rue des Moulins as party goers can (and do!) dance in the streets til dawn!

25th/26th June : Marathon du Mont Blanc
Get your lycra and your trainers at the ready for the annual Mont Blanc Marathon.  There are several different races taking place over the weekend depending on your level of fitness/pain tolerance!  Ranging from a 10km introductory trot into the world of trail running, to a half and full marathon and an 80km ultra run.  If you fancy something short but most definitely not sweet then take a look at the Vertical KM which is run against the clock.  Clue is in the name, participants run directly underneath the Brevent gondola to Plan Praz on a route that has 1000m of vertical height gain over a 4km course.  If the mere thought of this weekend makes you weary then there is plenty opportunity to cheer the runners on from a sunny terrace with a beer in hand.
